Shoshi met Rick for a late dinner as planned, exchanging air kisses with him before she sat down. A waiter appeared almost instantly, asking what she would like to drink. Fingers tapping out her jitteriness on her thigh, she ordered then turned to Rick. “How was your day?”

“It was good, productive. Still a lot to comb through, but it looks like company records are pretty accurate, well kept.”

“Good.” She forced a smile.

“Better now, of course. Ending the day with you, and with no unforeseen interruptions.” He sat back, relaxing in the chair.

“That’s sweet,” she said. And it was. Rick was expecting a Davin-free evening, which was what she wanted, too. They’d agreed not to discuss work things during their time together, and that was what she should try to do despite the apprehensive dread that had only coiled tighter over the last few hours. “So everything’s on the up and up?” she prodded. It was close enough to what they had been talking about.

The waiter reappearing with her drink prevented Rick from answering. “Are you ready to order?” the man asked.

Rick looked to her, and Shoshi nodded. “Go ahead,” she said, quickly flipping open the maroon folder that held the menu. She skimmed the list of entrées and settled on veggie lasagna. As the waiter moved on, she tasted her pomegranate martini, but even that didn’t help her relax. “So, good week so far,” she repeated.

“Yes, it is. How was your day? Luc get off okay?”

She hummed in the affirmative. “He should be occupied with a dinner meeting for most of the night.” He was with the other execs, so he shouldn’t need her for anything. Though he was still stuck in her head. So much for a Davin-free night.

“Good,” Rick said, nodding. After a pause, he added, “So I picked up that Ginsburg book.”

“Oh, yeah? How is it?” Their conversation was stilted, but it was her fault. She tried to focus in on what Rick was saying, but her mind kept slipping back to what she’d seen, and she had to replay his last words to come up with decent replies.

“Are you all right?” he asked eventually, seeing through her lackluster responses.

An affirmation died on her lips and Shoshi sighed. It wouldn’t be fair to drag him into whatever she’d found, but it was probably worse to lie, right? “I found out something, about Davin.”

Rick’s silverware clinked against the edge of his plate as he set it down. “I thought you didn’t want me getting involved.”

“I don’t,” she said quickly, also putting down her fork. “But it’s about company finances, and I don’t know who else to discuss this with.”

“Why not talk to Davin?”

“Because accusing your boss of embezzlement isn’t a great career move.” The words rushed out far ahead of her brain, and Shoshi winced. Embezzlement wasn’t a word to toss around in the finance world.

Rick’s expression soured and he straightened in his seat, the authority of his position radiating off him. “What exactly did you find?”

“Are you sure you want to know?”

“At this point, I don’t think either of us has much choice.
